Hello All,

In light of the ever-changing nature of this serious ongoing health crisis, Wharton Studio Museum is currently trying to determine the best and safest way forward for Silents Roar! Film Festival 2020. At this point in time, the Ithaca School District has canceled school until April 13th, though it could be longer; and we are monitoring Ithaca College’s plans, as well.

As of now, we plan to push the festival Submission Deadline to late May (specific date yet to be determined) to give students enough time to complete their films, with the hope of holding the Screening & Awards Ceremony at Ithaca College in June. If quarantine is lifted by our new Submission Deadline, we shall proceed with the festival as planned. In the case that quarantine procedures continue and schools do not resume, we are now exploring the possibility of making the festival a virtual event and streaming the films in an online presentation. Trying to turn lemons into lemonade!

Thank you for your patience. Stay healthy and safe, and we will keep you posted. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at silentsroarsubmission@gmail.com

Best,

Fiona Okumu and the Silents Roar! Team

About

Silents Roar! is the 3rd annual silent film competition for youth ages 11 – 18 of the Southern Tier of New York State, happening this Spring 2020. This is an exciting opportunity for young filmmakers to write, direct and produce their own short silent film to be seen by the community.

Presented by Wharton Studio Museum (WSM), a local nonprofit committed to preserving and celebrating Ithaca’s role in early American filmmaking, the competition will require entrants to produce and submit a silent film, three minutes in length and in a genre of their choosing. The films will be screened for the public at Ithaca College and prizes will be awarded by a jury panel at that time.

Competitors have the chance to receive gift cards, trophies, and more!

Conceived of by Ithaca High School Senior Fiona Okumu, who is currently a junior at Ithaca College, Silents Roar! gives local youth a forum in which they can explore their interest in film as an art form or career, and create works that explore themes relevant to them. WSM is proud to be part of this arts and education initiative that is inspired by the Whartons’ creative and entrepreneurial spirit.

No prior filmmaking experience is required!

The 3rd annual Silents Roar! Film Festival will be held on April 18th, 2020 at Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park Auditorium. We hope to see you there!
